Motown Downtown Revival

June 27, 2020 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

FestivalSouth® will close its 2020 season with Motown Downtown Revival, June 27. 2020, in the Historic Saenger Theater. Presented by Forrest General and brought to you by the creators of the sold-out smash Woodstock 50 earlier this year, and starring Vasti Jackson and G.C. Cameron,  the show features a high energy hit parade of some of the most iconic songs ever to come out of Motown. Jackson is an internationally known Blues and R&B singer and guitarist and Cameron is best known as the lead singer of The Spinners (“It’s a Shame and “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday”), and was a member of The Temptations when they were nominated for a Grammy in 2007

With cast of fabulous singers and the Festival Motown Orchestra, Motown Downtown Revival, is a spectacular concert that will feature some of the label’s greatest songs. Including hits by The Four Tops, The Jackson Five, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, and Diana Ross and The Supremes, it will also pay tribute to some of the great Mississippians like David Ruffin, Jimmy Ruffin, and Mary Wilson who helped make the Motown sound a worldwide phenomenon.

“The music, the moves, and the soul of this show is just incredible,” said Dr. Jay Dean, co-artistic director of FestivalSouth. “If you enjoyed our production of Woodstock 50 this past October, you will love this show with some of the most incredible talent to hit the stage.”

As an irresistible force of social and cultural change, Berry Gordy’s legendary Motown made its mark not just on the music industry, but society at large, with a sound that has become one of the most significant musical accomplishments and stunning success stories of the 20th century. Diana Ross & the Supremes, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson & the Jackson 5, the Marvelettes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Lionel Richie & the Commodores, Teena Marie, their music communicated and brought together a racially divided country and segregated society, around the world, touching all people of all ages and races.

No other record company in history has exerted such an enormous influence on both the style and substance of popular music and culture. With more than 180 No. 1 hit songs worldwide and counting, that influence is still being felt today, from pop to hip-hop. Motown recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the company’s founding.
