The Hub City Players present a musical for the whole family to enjoy! Featuring a wickedly tuneful score by the Academy- and Golden Globe-winning and Tony Award-nominated team of Pasek and Paul (“La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen”) and a curiously quirky book by Timothy Allen McDonald (Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka,” “The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley”), critics rave: “James and the Giant Peach is a “masterpeach!”

Festival South Artie Events for Families

One of our most successful series is Artie Events for Families! Children and their families are invited for fun and educational musical events, dance shows, an instrumental petting zoo, a special interactive Arts Fest and more! This year, many of our events will focus on The Life and Legacy of Jim Henson and our Mississippi Doodle Art events, specially created to commemorate, inspire, and celebrate 200 years of Mississippi’s statehood.

FestivalSouth values FestivalFamilies! That’s why most of our events appeal to the young and the young at heart. Created by Ivey Swan for FestivalSouth, the name is derived from the acronym A.R.T.S, representing A Road To Success. These daytime educational events are created with special consideration of the specific learning styles of children, ages 2-12, and appeal to the entire family. They provide opportunities for participants to fully experience the arts through all senses, often with hands-on opportunities.

Presented with support from Visit Mississippi and Dirt Cheap
Tickets at door (Advance tickets recommended)

Jim Henson’s classic, The Dark Crystal, takes place on another planet in the distant past, where a Gelfling embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of a magical crystal, and so restore order to his world.

Parents need to know that The Dark Crystal, although a Jim Henson puppet creature feature, is no Muppet Movie. Instead, it takes place in a dangerous otherworld where dark forces have taken over, and human-like beings called gelflings are rounded up, strapped to chairs with big needles, and drained of their "essence" for decrepit, dinosaur-like skeksis (pretty scary creatures, but also big buffoons). This movie isn't for everyone, and surely not for sensitive little ones under 7, but for the right kid just getting into fantasy books, this will rock their world.

The Muppet Movie (G) alt

The Muppet Movie was the first of a series of live-action musical feature films starring the Muppets. The classic film is a movie-in-a-movie, as we see Kermit the Frog and the rest of the Muppets gathering for the first screening of "The Muppet Movie." Kermit notes to his nephew Robin as the lights dim that the movie is a somewhat fictionalized account of the true story of how the Muppets first got together.

Parents need to know that the G-rated The Muppet Movie is a pretty likeable road trip romp with singable songs, but with some guns and slapstick violence. Throughout the movie Kermit is being pursued by men with guns and a couple shots are fired. Miss Piggy and Kermit are captured, Kermit almost gets his "brains scrambled" in a crazy electrical machine, and there's a final stand-off with guns drawn. But the Muppets always get away from the bad guys in a fun way (thanks to Miss Piggy's karate chops). There's some drinking -- Miss Piggy and Kermit drink wine with straws -- and minor characters smoke cigars.
